Greywater Systems & Composting Toilets
Many yurt dwellers rely on wells or rainwater catchment systems to provide water to the property. Wells and rainwater are not always dependable so conservation is important. Composting toilets, greywater systems and dual flush toilets are great at conserving water.
Sun Mar Composting Toilets
We use Sun Mar composting toilets in our yurts and plan to use them in our personal
bathroom area in the future. They also work well in cabins, boats, RV's, pool cabanas and anywhere you want a toilet without adding septic or water connections. Many people who use yurts for full or part time living prefer live without a septic tank system that requires digging for the septic tank and drain field. Trees are often destroye.d in the process. A composting toilet is often used since septic is not required.

We have a great opportunity to conserve water by reusing the water from shower, bathtub and
washing machine use. Such water is called greywater or graywater depending on who you talk to. An average four person household sends well over 38,000 gallons of reusable water down the drain each year from bathrooms and laundries. This water could be used for watering lawns and gardens. Fresh drinking water is not a finite resource. It's been said that in the near future water will become the next oil in terms of scarcity and worldwide demand.Since many yurt dwellers use composting toilets for the blackwater why not add a greywater system to handle the greywater?
We have found an affordable and simple to install/use greywater reuse system made for yard and garden
irrigation. During those wet weather times you can divert the greywater back into the septic system with a built in valve. The unit (picture above right) has a unique multi stage filtering system that uses Matala Filters proven for their effectiveness in over 40 countries.
Some yurt dwellers prefer a flush toilet. Flush toilets can be converted to dual flush easily (see below).
Save your well water by collecting greywater to flush your conventional toilet with the Water Legacy WL55 (picture at right). It collects greywater in a tank and filters it for reuse in the flush toilets of your home. Very simple to use as well.
For more information on both systems and other greywater reuse methods visit Greywater.
![]() We have been searching for ways to save water with regular flush toilets. We use low flush as well as composting toilets. This kit allows you to convert a regular or low flush toilet to have the option of a lower water flush for urine versus solids. The toilet handle turns both ways allowing for a dual flush.
The product comes in several options depending on the size of your current toilet's flush valve opening (2"-3"). If your current toilet has the traditional float and arm you will need to replace that as well so it will not hinder the new dual flush valve (can be purchased as an option). There is also a unit for one piece toilets.
Assembly takes about 30 minutes and requires that the tank be removed (except one piece toilets) in order to install the new dual flush valve. As mentioned a new handle apparatus is included for the dual flush mechanism. The link below also has a video showing installation.
Start saving significant water today with a dual flush toilet kit. Visit Dual Flush Toilet Kit for more information on the products and ordering.
